It is a technology used in so-called last mile projects (local loop) that require high performance wireless access, where the volume of operations per access point will be high and where they want more advanced features such as user control, high safety, quality service, etc... Such systems place a high value to corporate communications. In this type of infrastructure they can ensure protocols or services with high need and low latency operation, like IP telephony, do not exhibit problems. Very suitable for companies or institutions where capacity and wireless network security are very important. It is very common to hear about of pre-WiMAX when referring to 802.11a. But WiMAX has its own standard: 802.11d and 802.11e (depending on the manufacturer). The operating bands are typically two, 3.5 GHz and 5.4 GHz, although in reality we only work with the second. There are two types of infrastructures with this technology: PtP (point to point) and PtMP (point to multipoint). Speeds can vary depending in the manufacturer, but we can find from 20Mbps (or 70 Mbps maximum from the norm) to 300Mbps in PtP and usually up to 54Mbps in PtMP infrastructures.
